This was an important day for us. Our first show. It went like this…
From the offset we decided we wanted our first show to be in a familiar place, a low key event with people we knew. The use of laptops, samplers etc was a new venture for all of us and is always a worry when it comes to playing shows. In any band that any of us have been in before, it would have taken an awful lot to stop a show, there was always a certain safey net in an acoustic guitar. Now we don’t really have a safety net…it certainly makes things exciting.
We got off the train and had arrived in Guildford, it was bitterly cold and too foggy. Having travelled from London to Guildford, a relatively short distance, it was a shock to the system how much the weather had changed. We weren’t prepared.
Sound check was tough, backing tracks weren’t syncing in time with each other and just generally a bit of a nightmare. However, we had a sound guy who was not only incredibly knowledgable but also very patient. We will be forever thankful for him putting up with us. He is a friend of ours and a big part of why we decided to play at that venue. We eventually sorted it all out and felt a little more relaxed.
We decided to tell hardly anyone about the show, get a very few people’s honest opinions on what we were doing right/wrong. Ironically it ended up being pretty busy. The amount of times we have done shows in old bands when we have been sitting around just waiting/hoping for the room to pack out, now that we didn’t really want the room busy it did precisely that. We rolled with the punch.
We went on, played our set and came off on the whole happy. It wasn’t perfect, but it was never going to be. It went better than expected.
The night was finished off with a few bottles of Desperado’s, which incidentally is one of the nicest drinks around.
Ps Thank you to Suzi, Mike, Mark, Adam, Tom, Joel, Emily, The Boileroom, Vicky and anyone else who watched, clapped, engaged and cheered.
